Community Outreach is Key

Thornton Community Band (TCB) is pleased to partner with Skyview High School for Skyview's graduation ceremony, Saturday May 30th at 10am. Members of TCB will be sitting in with Skyview's band students to perform processional music for the event.

"Partnering with Skyview for graduation is an important opportunity for TCB," says Harley Brown, Board President. Skyview hosts the band's weekly rehearsals in its music room, and opens its auditorium to the public for TCB's performances.

Mapleton School District's Performing Arts Coordinator Robin Cutting contacted Brown about TCB pairing with Skyview's band for the graduation event. The TCB Board jumped at the chance: "Reaching out to Skyview's music students not only gives them a unique experience working with seasoned musicians, but gives us a way to contribute directly to Skyview's music program," Brown continued. "We hope we have future opportunities to work with Skyview's students."

This partnership with Skyview supports one of TCB's key goals: To encourage and assist young musicians. Even though TCB was established primarily as an adult musician organization, three of Skyview's students participate in the band by invitation or recommendation: Senior Kelsey Cook (Clarinet), Sophomore Jake Curnow (Percussion), and Senior Jonathan Fisher (Bass Clarinet). TCB also welcomed 13-year old Bassoonist See Lor this spring, a student from the Adams12 school district. "We hope, in addition to developing mentor relationships and improving musicianship, that these students see music as something they can enjoy for a lifetime."

Of course, serving the community through concerts and events is yet another key TCB goal. After TCB partners with Skyview on May 30th, the band will be gearing up for its biggest performance to date: the Thornton Independence Day Festivities, performing from 6-7pm at the open space fields at 108th and Colorado. "We are just delighted--honored, just one year after our inaugural concert--to have been invited to be part of this event!" Brown remarked.

The Fourth of July "American Park Concert" program includes "American Salute," "America the Beautiful," "Liberty Bell March," "Armed Forces Salute," and "Amparito Roca," among several others. The concert will also highlight the popular "Bugler's Holiday" and "Dixieland Celebration" pieces, which feature masterful small-ensemble performances. The program will also feature Thornton City Council Member Chuck Stevenson as the vocal soloist to perform "God Bless America."
